First Grade

In first grade, one of the most important outcomes for the year in math is to improve speed and accuracy when adding and subtracting to 20. (e.g., 17-8). They will need to understand the place and value of each digit in order to add numbers to the sum of 100 or less. Your child will become more independent as a reader and writer this year. First grade students learn to recognize the sounds that make up words and also use meaning to help determine complex words. Students will learn to think about what they read and talk about the main ideas of simple stories and a wide range of reading materials.
