AHS Student Starts Tutoring Program For Elementary Schoolers

ASHEBORO – At the April Asheboro City Schools Board of Education meeting, Nikia Domally, principal at Lindley Park Elementary, recognized the school’s community partner, Asheboro High School’s Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society Club. Mu Alpha Theta is a math society for students who excel in mathematics, but specifically at AHS, it is a volunteer and fundraising-centered club. The club was honored for its members' volunteer work at the school by tutoring students at Lindley Park Elementary in math multiple times a week. Teachers have also seen a positive change in their students’ math work and genuine excitement for learning from their tutors. Mu Alpha Theta tutors have been visiting Lindley Park since February, where, with the help of Principal Domally, they coordinated picking days, grades, and group sizes for tutors.

Asheboro High School sophomore Helen Britt helped kickstart this tutoring program to give back to her former elementary school, Lindley Park. Britt with the help of two friends, Penny Smith, and Chloe Chanmaly, started the program by presenting the idea at a club meeting, which helped it gain traction and volunteers. This led to the program taking off and becoming a consistent partnership between Mu Alpha Theta and Lindley Park. Tutors and teachers say they have noticed growth in tutored students.

“He’s more confident in his work and has been progressing through different math subjects,” stated Britt when discussing the 2nd grader she tutors.

Even though Britt visits Lindley Park three times a week in the morning before classes begin at the high school, she uses even more of her time to be involved in other ways. She is also a member of various clubs, such as Junior Civitan, Neurology Club (treasurer), DECA, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She also plays the flute in the AHS band, is a part of the volleyball and track teams, and is the vice president of the sophomore class. Outside of school and extracurricular activities, she enjoys spending time with her friends and trying new things.

“I am proud of the growth that the kids have made, and I am proud to be a part of a group of people that are dedicated and hard-working.”  -- Helen Britt, sophomore at AHS
