Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: Dubraska Stines
In celebration, we are recognizing Hispanic and Latino members of the ACS community. On our final HHM 2024 highlight post, we lift up a district leader, Dubraska Stines, ACS's Multilingual Learners Lead Teacher.

Can you tell us about your heritage and how it has shaped your personal and professional journey?
As a Venezuelan, my heritage is a vibrant blend of indigenous, African, and Spanish influences, which have deeply shaped my identity. Growing up surrounded by this diversity instilled in me a strong sense of community, resilience, and the value of education. Professionally, these values have driven my passion for creating inclusive learning environments where all students, regardless of their background, can thrive and feel valued.

Can you recommend any books, music, or films that you feel beautifully represent Hispanic and Latino culture?
There are so many beautiful representations of our culture, but a few that stand out are:
--Books:  Doña Bárbara by Rómulo Gallegos  It is a classic novel that delves into the rural life, landscapes, and social issues of Venezuela.  It’s a key piece of Venezuelan literature and gives a profound insight into the country’s cultural and historical roots.
--Music: The work of Simón Díaz, a Venezuelan folk singer, is a perfect example of how music can encapsulate the soul of a people.
--Films: Encanto is a vibrant celebration of Colombian culture which is similar to Venezuelan culture, family dynamics, and the magic that lives within us all. Its themes of intergenerational strength and the importance of family resonate deeply with the broader Latin American experience.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, what message would you like to share with the community and beyond?
Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the rich tapestry of our cultures, but it’s also a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come and the contributions we continue to make to society. I encourage everyone to take this opportunity to learn more about the diversity within the Hispanic and Latino communities and to embrace the values of unity, respect, and mutual understanding.
