In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are recognizing Hispanic and Latino members of the ACS community. Today, we highlight Crystal Cortez who is a Kindergarten teacher at Donna Lee Loflin Elementary. Crystal grew up in Franklinville, NC and attended Belmont Abbey College after graduating from Providence Grove HS. Mrs. Cortez is in her 7th year at Loflin. Fun fact: She was the 2023-2024 Finalist for Asheboro City School's Teacher of the Year!
Who has been the biggest
influence in your life, and how have they impacted your understanding of your heritage?
My parents are from the same small town in Nayarit, Mexico. They have been the biggest influence in my life. They have taught me the importance of family, connection, and honoring our roots.
Can you recommend any books, music, or films that you feel beautifully represent Hispanic and Latino culture?
One of my favorite films is Under the Same Moon. The movie highlights the hardships and challenges that many families face in their pursuit of a better life in the United States.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, what message would you like to share with the community and beyond?
It brings me great joy to share my culture and language with both my students and their families. I believe that representation is important, because students benefit from having access to mentors, advocates, and leaders who can genuinely understand and relate to their experiences and challenges. This connection fosters a sense of belonging and ensures that students feel both seen and supported in their academic and personal growth.
