Celebrating Black History: Raven Bias

As part of #ACSBHM25 celebrations, we are posting a digital showcase on our social media accounts to highlight influential Black leaders, both historical and modern, who have made an impact in various fields. Raven Bias, NAMS art teacher, wanted to pay tribute to Augusta Savage, a sculptor and educator! Augusta Savage was a Black artist during the Harlem Renaissance. She paved the way for greater representation of Black artists by creating opportunities for them through education and advocacy, while also using her art to portray the dignity and complexity of Black life. She was a significant figure in the fight for racial justice and artistic inclusion. Her legacy continues to inspire contemporary artists and activists today.

"I have created nothing really beautiful, really lasting, but if I can inspire one of these youngsters to develop the talent I know they possess, then my monument will be in their work."—Augusta Savage
