In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we are recognizing Hispanic and Latino members of the ACS community. Today, we highlight a dynamic couple who both work at Asheboro High School: V. Carolina Agüero, a Spanish teacher, and her husband Martin Stanich, an ESL teacher.
Can you tell us about your heritage and how it has shaped your personal and professional journey?
We were both born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Our passion for teaching and new adventures brought
us to the US in 2003. Our love for this town and all the dear friends we have made since moving here in 2006 contributed to our decision to make Asheboro our home and raise our children here. Our lives were forever changed when we decided to live in the US and could not have done it without the support of our families in Argentina and the welcoming embrace from Asheboro.
Can you recommend any books, music, or films that you feel beautifully represent Hispanic and Latino culture?
When it comes to music, we really believe that Astor Piazolla (contemporary tango composer), Mercedes Sosa (folk/folkloric singer), and Soda Stereo (pop/rock band) have represented Argentina well and have had a positive and lasting impact in Latino culture. We love all the movies directed by Pedro Almodovar (Spain) and Guillermo del Toro (Mexico). These film directors have a passionate and unique way of portraying the human experience.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, what message would you like to share with the community and beyond?
Hispanic Heritage Month is a great opportunity for our school community to celebrate the rich diversity and cultural beauty that our students and their families contribute to our schools every day. We encourage all our community members to participate actively in the cultural activities and events that are offered at our schools and around town during HHM this year. Asheboro is fortunate to have such a hardworking and dedicated Latino community, and we are very proud to be a part of it! We also encourage everybody to travel as much as they can. Traveling can make us more grateful, more humble and more empathetic too!
